Uber operates in more than 70 cities around the world, but local regulations prevent the on-demand car service from competing with traditional taxis in Miami and other Florida cities.
Rubio has called such rules antiquated and says government should streamline regulations. Taxi drivers argue that ridesharing companies need more scrutiny because they are avoiding costly requirements commercial drivers are forced to follow.
Rubio said Miami-Dade County regulations that stand in the way of Uber include forcing passengers to wait at least an hour for a non-taxi option, charging at least $70 for each ride regardless of distance, and a requirement to book the vehicle's services for at least two hours.
