Round Up Of Winners & Losers In August Primary

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The August Primary has set up a major show down for the Governor's office.

Former Governor Charlies Crist defeated former state Senate Democratic leader Nan Rich in a landslide. Crist had 74 percent of the vote compared to 26 percent for Rich. He is the first person in Florida to win the nomination for governor as a Republican and a Democrat.

In November, Crist will go up against Governor Rick Scott who easily beat out two little know challengers with 88 percent of the vote.  Also on the ballot will be Libertarian Adrian Wyllie.

The race for governor is shaping up to be a tight one. According to the "Real Clear Politics Polling Average" Crist and Scott are neck and neck. When Crist first got into the race he was ten points ahead. Now Scott is actually one point ahead with 43.5 percent of the vote, Crist garned 42.5 percent.

Daniella Levine-Cava defeated incumbent Lynda Bell with 52 percent of the vote. Only three incumbents in the last 20 years have lost in this race.

Another Miami-Dade County Commission race which generated some heat was that of District 2, considered one of the county's poorest.

The first Haitian-American Commissioner, incumbent Jean Monestime, was in a rematch with Dorrin Rolle, the man he won against back in 2010.

Monestime won with 64 percent while Rolle was at 30 percent.

SkyRise Miami, a giant observation tower and tourist attraction behind Bayside Marketplace, has been given the green light by Miami voters. The public supported the 1,000-foot tower — coupled with a long-term lease extension for Bayside's operator — won by a roughly two-to-one margin.

We will have to wait until November to see who will be the new mayor of North Miami. None of the candidates garnered more than 50 percent of the vote so the race will be decided in a run off. Kevin Burns and Joseph Smith received the most votes. They are looking to fill the seat vacated by Lucie Tondreau after fraud accusations.

In Broward, Court Judge Lynn Rosenthal has won re-election.

This was a closely watched race because Rosenthal was arrested three months ago after crashing her SUV into a gate at the courthouse. She pleaded guilty to reckless driving and spoke about the dangers of sleep driving after taking a sleep medication the night before work.

Rosenthal won her race with 57-percent of the vote.
