Rickenbacker, Venetian Causeways To Go SunPass Only

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - There's a big change coming to the Rickenbacker and Venetian Causeways.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 23rd, tolls will be collected electronically via SunPass. This means that cash and county-issued C-Pass transponders will no longer be accepted.

The Department of Transportation said the use of SunPass transponders to collect tolls will be more convenient for drivers and create a smoother ride with no-need-to-stop.

Drivers of cars and trucks with a SunPass will pay the standard toll rate of $1.75 per trip on the Rickenbacker Causeway and $1.75 each way on the Venetian Causeway. Drivers crossing the causeways without a SunPass transponder will have their license tags photographed and be sent their tolls in the mail at a cost of $2.25 per trip and a monthly administrative fee of $2.50.

"By implementing SunPass at the Rickenbacker and Venetian Causeway Plazas, we are modernizing and streamlining toll collection, bringing greater efficiency to the process while alleviating traffic flow," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

Key Biscayne and Venetian Causeway residents and eligible commuters with annual plans will continue to enjoy their annual plan rates; however, they must associate their SunPass transponders with their causeway toll plans by September 23rd to avoid per-trip toll charges.
