Rickenbacker & Venetian Causeway Tolls Convert To SunPass

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The Rickenbacker and Venetian Causeways are going electronic.

Starting Tuesday, September 23rd tolls will be collected using SunPass.

Drivers will have to switch to SunPass to make their trips on the two causeways. For drivers resistant to change or who simply don't have SunPass, Toll-By-Plate will monitor their trips. Cash and County-Issued C-Pass transponders will no longer be accepted.

Motorists driving two-axle vehicles with a SunPass transponder will pay the standard toll rate of $1.75 per trip on the Rickenbacker Causeway and $1.75 each way on the Venetian Causeway. For non-SunPass users, Toll-By-Plate  raises the cost to $2.25 per trip with a monthly administrative fee of $2.50.

"By implementing SunPass at the Rickenbacker and Venetian Causeway Plazas, we are modernizing and streamlining toll collection, bringing greater efficiency to the process while alleviating traffic flow," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez in a statement. "Residents, commuters and tourists will experience greater convenience as they enjoy traveling on these two beautiful and historic roadways."

Residents and eligible commuters with annual plans can still pay their annual plan rates, but must associate their SunPass transponders with their causeway toll plans by September 23rd to avoid per-trip toll charges.
