BOCA RATON (CBSMiami) -- Nearly 50 dogs will be getting a second leash on life after they were rescued from a puppy mill in Mississippi.

The Tri-County Animal Rescue, a Boca Raton animal shelter, said the rescue mission was led by a three-person team following an "extensive legal undercover operation," according to the shelter's Executive Director and Co-Founder Suzi Goldsmith.

"These dogs were a part of a puppy mill in Tate County, Mississippi. They had lived their entire lives in squalor and isolation," said Goldsmith, whose non-profit, no-kill shelter boasts nearly 2,500 animal rescues every year.

Shelter staff will now help get the dogs healthy and rehabilitated in preparation for a new home with an adoptive family.
