SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – The Florida Panthers are planning on making a big change in time for the 2016-17 season.

According to George Richards of the Miami Herald, the Panthers organization is planning on "completely rebranding" itself with a brand new logo and a possible new color scheme.

The report states that the team colors, which have been the same red-blue-gold since the team's inception in the early 90s, will remain "similar", but that leaves a lot of room for changes.

The Panthers logo, known as the 'leaping cat', has been the same since Florida's inaugural season in 1993.

A variation was introduced with the team's first alternate jersey, with the leaping cat holding a broken hockey stick.

Several years later the Panthers added another alternate jersey, this one with two different shades of blue and a circular logo with a panther head that was different than the one on the leaping cat.

That jersey was not well received by fans and was quickly removed from the team's attire rotation, though you can still spot one every so often at Panthers home games.

The Panthers face the Washington Capitals on Thursday, December 10th at 7:30 p.m. You can hear every game on Sports Radio 560 WQAM, the radio home of the Florida Panthers.
