Report: Marlins Showing Interest In Vernon Wells
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins continue to look for the cheapest available labor to fill in the remaining holes on the roster, primarily on the bench.
According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins are looking for a right-handed bat to come off the bench and one name on the list is former New York Yankees player Vernon Wells.
Wells, 35, was designated for assignment by the Yankees earlier in January after batting just .233 with 11 home runs in 2013. Wells would be a right-handed option and could likely be signed for not much more than a minor-league contract at this point.
According to Frisaro, the 2014 season will be Wells' last in his seven-year, $126 million contract. The Yankees pay $2.4 million of Wells' salary this season, with the Angels picking up the remaining $18.6 million.
