Report Emerges That Dolphins Are Talking Extension With Wake

DAVIE (CBSMiami) – It's no secret that the Miami Dolphins are going to have to make some financial changes in order to hit the free agent pool as hard as owner Stephen Ross tends to do.
The main idea that has been making the rounds is the restructuring of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh's contract, which could still very well happen.
Another idea that's been thrown around is releasing veteran pass rusher Cameron Wake.
Wake is heading into the final year of his current contract which is set to pay him $9.8 million.
NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Dolphins are in discussions with Wake regarding a potential contract extension that would lower his cap hit and keep him in Miami for the next few years.

This would play a big part in the Dolphins desire to retain Olivier Vernon, who is an unrestricted free agent.
Lowering Wake's cap hit would give Miami the option to possibly put the franchise tag on Vernon, as well as giving the Dolphins a very strong pass rush unit.
Of course this is all depending how strongly Wake will return from his season-ending torn Achilles injury.
