Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was "preparing to fire" Joe Philbin as of last night with tight ends coach Dan Campbell as the "leading candidate" to replace him, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter via Facebook.

"As of last night, the Dolphins were preparing to fire head coach Joe Philbin, per league sources. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross always could change his mind, but the organization was preparing to make a move as soon as today, per sources. Should Ross follow through with his plan, Dolphins tight ends coach Dan Campbell would be the leading candidate to become the interim head coach and replace Philbin."

Campbell joined Miami's staff in 2011 after playing in the NFL for 11 seasons as a tight end.

The Miami Dolphins are off to a 1-3 start after two consecutive double-digit defeats the past two weeks.
