PEMBROKE PINES (CBSMiami) – A search in the Pembroke Pines area for a prisoner who escaped from the South Florida State Hospital ended late Sunday morning.

His name is Leandro Guimaraes and Pembroke Pines police say he has a violent history and was court ordered to the facility, which is located at 800 East Cypress Drive.

At around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning members of the community recognized the suspect walking near the intersection of Red Road and Miramar Parkway.  They quickly called 9-1-1.

Members of the Miramar Police Department responded and officers identified the suspect and apprehended him without incident.

Guimares was transported back to Florida State Hospital.  He now faces State Correctional System Escape charges.

Authorities began searching for the suspect around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Guimares jumped over a fence on the west side of the hospital grounds and took off on foot.

The 32-year-old prisoner is described as a white male, 5'9" and 160 pounds with a full beard.

Police say he has an extensive criminal history.

Preliminary investigation suggests that Guimares was not responsible for any further criminal activity while unaccounted for.

The investigation remains active.
