Presidential Races Inspire New Keys' Tourism Campaign

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami/FKNB) - This year's presidential races have provided inspiration for a Florida Keys tourism campaign that has debuted in the nation's capitol.

"Donald, is that you?" is the headline on a large poster showing a snowy egret with windblown head plumage rising against a Florida Keys sunset.

The poster, alluding to Republican candidate Donald Trump, is among a series of large-format ads on display at two Washington Metro stations as part of a $302,000 campaign funded by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council that administrates tourism promotion for the Florida Keys & Key West.

"It's a perfect image to play off his (Trump's) challenging hair," said Dorn Martell, vice president of creative for Tinsley Advertising, the TDC's agency that created the ads. "We once used the image before with the headline 'Bad Hair Day,' but it just seemed to translate for the political season."

While the Keys tourism council does not endorse any presidential candidate, the Washington-area campaign does feature other politically tied messaging.

"Strong response to the latest poles" is the message on a poster showing a mahi-mahi fish being reeled in by an angler on a charter fishing boat off the Keys, "Party Platform" depicts a couple holding cocktails on a balcony in Islamorada and a poster displaying a couple relaxing in a Big Pine Key hammock is headlined "Swing State."

The Florida Keys News Bureau contributed to this report.
