MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An armed carjacking suspect is under arrest in Miami after leading police on a high-speed pursuit that started when he stole an SUV at knifepoint from an 85-year-old woman at Dadeland Mall in Kendall.

The suspect was identified as Carlos Heriberto Escutary, 42, from Hialeah.

Miami-Dade Police responded to Dadeland Mall Friday afternoon after the elderly woman from Brazil was confronted by Heriberto with a knife.

Police say he demanded the victim's 2018 grey Nissan Rogue and drove away.

"This is another reminder of how everyone has to be aware of their surroundings," said Miami-Dade Police Det. Angel Rodriguez.

Police quickly issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) and when officers tried to make a traffic stop, he took off.

Police pursued the Rogue from Kendall to the City of Miami where the suspect crashed into a parked vehicle at SW 1st Street and 5th Avenue.

Heriberto is being charged with carjacking, armed robbery and aggravated assault on a person 65 years or older.
