Police: Man Who Shot Stepdaughter Still At Large

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade Police are looking for a man who allegedly shot his stepdaughter and tried to shoot her mother on Thursday.

Thursday evening Bernex Lucas's white 2014 Toyota Tundra was found in the area of 167th Street and NW 1st Avenue.

Lucas, 49, remains at large.

"The subject is on the loose and he's considered armed and dangerous," said Elena Hernandez of Miami-Dade Police.

The stepdaughter and the woman were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. No word yet on their condition.

According to police, it all happened at 15030 S. Biscayne River Drive.

Neighbors said that doesn't sound like the Bernex Lucas they know.

"He's a good man. Can't believe he would do this," said neighbor Samuel Flowers.

Flowers said he's lived next door to Lucas for 22 years. He said the family has been dealing with private issues for some time.

"I believe they were getting a divorce. They were working on it. There was trouble. They were not together," said Flowers.

Dayana Saint-Fort said she was driving by Thursday morning when she saw the 21-year-old victim begging for help.

"Screaming, crying, up and down the street," said Saint-Fort. "She came out saying 'I don't want to die on my birthday'!"

Saint-Fort said she applied pressure to the gunshot wounds and tried to keep the young woman conscious. Her efforts may have helped save the victim's life but she's slow to accept credit.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
