Police-involved shooting under investigation in North Miami Beach

MIAMI - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a reported police-involved shooting in North Miami Beach on Thursday afternoon.

It happened at around 2 p.m. in the area of the 16800 block of NE 2nd Avenue.

Police said a suspect was holding a machete to a woman's throat inside a building when he was shot by police.

Here's what North Miami Beach Police Chief Harvette Smith said about the incident:

"Once inside the office building, the officers observed the subject take a female in custody, with the machete pointed at her neck in an attempt to kill her. At that point, our officers again gave commands for the subject to drop the knife. The subject refused to drop the knife at that point, making my officers resort to using deadly force to save a life."

The woman is said to be OK, but the man died as a result of his injuries.

Images from the scene showed a heavy police presence.

As is customary, in cases involving police-involved shootings, the FDLE will continue to handle the investigation.
