FLORIDA CITY (CBSMiami) – Police are investigating a police-involved shooting that left one man dead in a Florida City apartment.

The shooting took place Wednesday at around 1 p.m. on the 1400 block of Northwest 2nd Avenue in Florida City.

Police said two detectives were conducting a criminal investigation inside an apartment when they got into a confrontation with Juvan Simon.

"One of the detectives discharged his firearm striking the adult male," authorities said. "Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and pronounced the male deceased on the scene."

Police confirmed that "the subject" was in possession of a gun at the time of the incident, but did not describe the type of gun.

Detectives have been interviewing people in the area trying to get to the bottom of what happened.

CBS4 spoke to the parents of the man who was killed.

They say he was only 23 years old and was hanging out with friends when this happened.

Police have not identified the detective who they say fired his gun, but tell CBS4 that he has been with the Florida City Police Department for three years.

His father, Levi Simon says, "He's (Juvan) not a troublemaker, in fact he grew up here and those people he was with are his friends. We've lived here for 17 years."

His mother says she asked police, "Why didn't you get him some help? They didn't even bother to help him."
