8-year-old drowns during North Lauderdale house party

An investigation is underway after an eight-year-old child possibly drowned in a pool during a house party in Broward County early Sunday morning.

Just after midnight, Broward County Sheriff's deputies were called out to a home near 6700 Stardust Dr. in North Lauderdale regarding reports of a possible drowning. Upon arrival, deputies found the "unresponsive" child, who witnesses said was "found in a pool" during a house party, BSO said.

North Lauderdale Fire Rescue was also called to the scene and took the child to an area hospital for treatment. However, the child later died, BSO said.

BSO's Homicide and Crime Scene Units were notified to investigate the possible drowning. A representative with the Florida Department of Children and Families was also contacted.

The circumstances surrounding the child's death remain under investigation.
