FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A man who was visiting family in Lauderhill was shot and killed overnight.

The shooting happened in parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2900 block of NW 55th Avenue.

Yellow cones put down by police marked more than a dozen shell casings littered the ground. Bullet holes were also found in the hood of one car, a second car had a window which had been shot out.

"Roughly around one o'clock this morning some residents from the apartment complex made 911 phone calls stating that there were some shots fired in parking lot," said police Lt. Greg Solowsky. "The officers arrived within minutes of the initial phone call and discovered a young man in the parking lot that was suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound."

The man, identified as 23-year old Joshua Stephen, was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

Several residents of the apartment building told police Stephen was a long time resident. He was visiting several family members who live in the complex when he was shot.

"The family of the victim has asked the police department to reach out to the media and also to community, they are begging for the assistance from anybody who may have any information whatsoever to please come forward to help us resolve this case," said Solowsky.

One long time resident of the apartment building who did not wish to be named in this report said while shootings in the area are rare, he's been concerned about his safety recently.

"Everybody moving in, everybody walking in whenever they want, I can't wait to get out," he said.

Homicide investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting.
