FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Police have released the name of a man shot to death at an apartment complex across the street from Plantation High School.

The shooting happened early Tuesday evening at the Del Oro Apartments on NW 16th Street just west of Sunrise Boulevard. Moments after gunshots were heard, the body of 25-year old Jeron Perkins was found beneath a large tree just feet from the complex's parking lot.

Residents of the complex said Perkins had just recently moved there from Jamaica where he has two children.

"He was quiet, didn't really bother anybody," said neighbor Selena Harvey.

Investigators do not believe the shooting was random.

Witnesses told police they saw a car pull up, heard the shots and then saw the car speed off.

Nereida Lopez said she heard the shots just before 6 p.m.

"I heard kind of like eight shots, they say 16 but I didn't see him. I got very nervous I looked out the window and saw car," said neighbor Nereida Lopez. "We came out and they were cleaning the sidewalk and I said I don't want to see it. I'm old and that was very scary".

A few buildings down from the murder scene, the resident at an apartment said a bullet burst into her daughter's window right around the time of the shooting down the street.

A few hours before the shooting, police were called to the Del Oro apartment complex to break up a fight.

Investigators are trying to determine if the shootings and fight are related.
