CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade Police say an 87-year-old man shot a woman inside a Coral Gables hospital and then turned the revolver on himself and took his own life.

The elderly man from Hialeah was distraught because his girlfriend of more than 30 years had died this weekend at Kindred Hospital at 5190 S.W. 8th St.

Police said the shooting may have stemmed from guardianship issues involving the girlfriend.

A source inside Kindred Hospital told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that the female victim was the niece of the girlfriend. It happened around 9:30 a.m.

Police said the shooter had called that woman to the hospital and witnesses saw them speaking to each other. She walked away and he produced the gun and fired multiple shots and then shot himself.

The girlfriend's niece was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Police said she is expected to survive.

They say the gunman was pronounced dead on the scene. His body was removed from the lobby of the hospital Monday afternoon.

A spokesman for Kindred Hospital said he had no comment.

Police may get more answers after they interview the victim. So far they have not released the names of the shooter and his girlfriend and the girlfriend's niece.

D'Oench tied to speak with hospital employees but they said they were told not to comment.

The hospital's website says the facility offers "transitional care" and is a "long-term care" medical facility for "complex patients" needing "extended care and recovery."
