HIALEAH (CBSMiami) - There is a pigeon problem in Hialeah.  No, not as a nuisance, but rather they are getting stolen.

Police in Hialeah said they are getting calls about twice a month that people's pet pigeons are being pilfered.

On December 30th, at around 6 a.m. police said three people tried to steal about 12 pigeons from Leonor Mendez's backyard. A neighbor noticed something suspicious was going on and alerted authorities, who arrested the three.

Mendez's daughter, Heidy Mendez, told CBS4's Cynthia Demos that this is a hobby for a lot of people who are Hispanic.  She said her dad's pets relax him after work.

Carl Zogby with the Hialeah Police Department said, "It was foiled before they can even get away with anything."

The family said the birds are worth about $2,000 to $3,000.

Heidy Mendez said that her dad "feeds them well. They're fat, they're well fed."
