Joe Philbin: 'I Certainly Didn't Come to Miami to Be 8-8'

Joe Philbin came out firing on Day 1 of Miami Dolphins Training Camp last week, talking about coming to Miami to win championships. So what was his thought process behind making bold claims right off the bat?

"It was kind of in the context of why I came to Miami four years ago. I certainly didn't come to Miami to be 8-8," Philbin said on the Joe Rose Show. "Steve Ross doesn't want that. Our fans want more than that, deserve more than that. I just wanted to let the players know this is why... We all make a lot of sacrifices to be in the NFL. It's a great opportunity and privilege to be in the NFL but this is why I'm here. They need to know that. This is why all the decisions that we make are based on helping us win championships."

On Ryan Tannehill:

"Zac Taylor -- does a great job with our a quarterback's -- showed me a stat yesterday when we took the day off after four days of camp and we did a little comparison from last year. He's throwing the ball better. What you're seeing as an observer at practice is accurate. I mean I think he's throwing the ball better. His accuracy is better. We're really pleased with where he is so far."

On Ndamukong Suh:

"He can be really disruptive because he has really good get-off initially so he can penetrate into the backfield and he can cause headaches."

On leadership:

"It could be more important than our gameplans and our schemes and all that. It doesn't work if you don't have the right chemistry in the locker room. And if guys aren't there for the right reasons... Your actions have to be consistent with those that want to be champions and that takes making hard decisions and doing hard things on and off the field."
