Broward County deputy hit and kills man on Pompano Beach road

POMPANO BEACH — A man is dead after they were struck and killed by a Broward Couty Sheriff's deputy early Saturday morning.

Just after 5:30 a.m., BSO Pompano Beach district deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to a crash involving an on-duty deputy and a pedestrian near the 1500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Upon arrival, deputies found the other deputy — who was identified as 24-year-old Wyatt Jennesse — and the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead on the scene. He was later identified as 28-year-old Jamil Moreland of Fort Lauderdale.

According to investigators, Jennesse was responding to a lewd and lascivious report near North Powerline Road. He was driving westbound on MLK  in the left-thru lane after going through the intersection of Northwest 15th Avenue. Meanwhile, Moreland was either "laying or in a crouched position" in the road when Jennesse struck him. The deputy came to a controlled stop and then reported the incident.

Investigators then stated that Moreland was allegedly the individual related to the call Jennesse was responding to and no other injuries were reported.

At this time, driver impairment, excessive speed and mechanical malfunction are not considered to be contributing factors to the incident as the investigation continues.

Editor's Note: Greg LaCerra with the International Union of Police Association (IUPA), who represents the deputies and sergeants of BSO, brought to CBS News Miami's attention of a factual error made. The final paragraph originally stated that "... driver impairment, excessive speed and mechanical malfunction are considered to be contributing factors to the incident.." when it should have stated that the following were "not considered to be contributing factors" to the case.
