The closure this week will allow contractors to pour asphalt on the roadway and install overhead sign panels as part of the SR 826/SR 836 Interchange Reconstruction Project.

"That's going to provide drivers driving on this corridor with a smooth drive and it's also going to help with the water drainage on the side of the road where the drainage inlets are placed," said Construction Specialist Oscar Gonzalez.

The closure is part of the ongoing project to help alleviate congestion on the aptly nicknamed 'crawlmetto.' To get around those closures, Gonzalez drivers "should give themselves a little extra time when coming through here and follow the posted detour signs and they should end up at their final destination without any problems."

Unfortunately, you haven't heard the last of construction on the Palmetto Expressway. Crews will be laying asphalt on every direction of the 826-836 interchange.

"This operation will be ongoing through the next couple of months as we try to finalize the friction portion throughout the entire project limits," Gonzalez.

But there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

"We expect the entire project to be completed by late June, early July," said Gonzalez.
