SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – It had been a few days since the Florida Panthers had made any moves, so clearly something had to be done about that.

On Wednesday the Panthers announced that they had signed center Derek MacKenzie to a two-year contract extension.

"Derek is a leader on our team and a true professional," said Panthers General Manager Tom Rowe. "His experience, work ethic and character make him a respected presence on the ice and throughout our organization."

MacKenzie, 35, had one year left on the initial three-year deal he had signed with Florida and now is set to remain with the team through the 2018-19 season.

The two-year extension is worth $2.7 million, which means he will make $1.3 million this season off his last contract and then $1.375 million in each of the following two years on the new deal.

MacKenzie had 13 points (6g 7a) in 64 games with the Panthers last season while leading the team with a 54.8 faceoff win percentage. He also led all Florida forwards with 154 hits.

A leader on and off the ice, MacKenzie is a mainstay on the Panthers penalty kill.
