SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – The Florida Panthers organization understands the importance of veteran, 'locker room' guys to its mostly young roster.

One of the team's most valuable veteran players is sticking around for one more year.

On Thursday the Panthers announced that the team has agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension for forward Shawn Thornton.

The deal is worth $750,000, with a $600,000 NHL salary and another $150,000 in games played bonuses.

"Shawn is a highly respected and hardworking member of our hockey club, both on and off the ice," Tallon said. "His experience and leadership have made a positive impact on our locker room and on our young players as they continue their development."

Thornton, who turns 39 this summer, has played in 35 games this season for the Panthers and has scored three points (1g 2a) and amassed 50 penalty minutes.

Florida has gone 20-11-4 with Thornton in the lineup this season.

"We are pleased to have Shawn return for another season," Panthers Owner, Chairman & Governor Vinnie Viola said. "Shawn is the embodiment of the selfless, team-first culture we are trying to create on and off the ice with the Florida Panthers and has made himself an important part of the South Florida community. We look forward to having this man of character as a leader within our organization for many years to come."
