22 Tips, No Leads In Death Investigation Of 'Baby June' Found In Boynton Beach Inlet

WEST PALM BEACH (CBSMiami) – The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office provided an update Friday on the investigation into 'Baby June'.

It was nearly one year ago that the unidentified baby was found floating in the Boynton Beach Inlet.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's detectives believe the child might have floated into the area from Broward County.

"We got a reverse drift study done and that showed the child if it was in the water for the length of time that we think it was in the water, then it came up from Broward County," Capt. Steven Strivelli said, adding that the baby could have been from as far south as Pompano Beach.

An off-duty Boynton Beach firefighter was boating on the ocean side of the inlet last year when he saw the baby floating in the water.

Capt. Strivelli said police have received a total of 22 tips from the public.

"Nothing has produced any further leads for us and we have checked 700 newborns that were born in Palm Beach and Broward counties in the time frame that we suspect that this baby was born in. We still need assistance from the public," said Capt. Strivelli.

Investigators say the baby girl was between 4-7 days old and was floating in the ocean for six to 18 hours before being discovered.

Officials have already declared the baby's death a homicide.

Investigators believe the baby's mother gave birth in a hospital sometime around Memorial Day in 2018 due to a prick on her heel, which is commonly done for a blood test.

Police previously said the genomic ancestry of the baby is 50-percent Central Asian and 50-percent African ancestry. Police said that's an unusual split and most often a person with this 50-50 split would be found in areas like Barbados, Trinidad or Jamaica or from these areas originally.

Detectives also revealed on Friday that they have filed Baby June's DNA with a DNA database in hopes of discovering her identity.

"This test is going to be run constantly for any type of family member connection," Capt. Strivelli said.

A $10,000 reward remains in place.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Baby June Hotline at 561-688-4155 or Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 1-800-458-TIPS.
