WESTON (CBSMiami) - An accident involving three tractor trailers and fuel tanker caused a big mess on U.S. 27 just north of I-75 Friday early morning.

By Friday evening, that portion of US-27 was reopened hours after the crash. Drivers are still being asked to be aware that workers are in the area.

"We had a semi tractor-trailer heading southbound on U.S. 27 when, for some reason, still under investigation, the driver lost control and came across the median into the northbound lanes," said Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Alvaro Feola.

Seconds later, a gasoline tanker heading north flipped over trying to avoid the crash.

"We had another tractor-trailer that was unable to avoid and braked and turned to the left and overturned in the median. That's the tanker you see up there with the fuel leak," said Feola.

The crashes weren't over yet.

"Once the tanker overturned we had two more tractor trailers that were traveling northbound collided with a trailer of the truck that was heading southbound," said Feola.

While no one was hurt, the crash left behind big problems. That tanker that flipped was loaded with gas and it began leaking.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue's Hazardous Materials was able to secure the leak and lay a foam blanket to subdue the flammable vapors.

Due to the large amount of fuel carried by the tanker truck, firefighters oversaw the transfer of fuel from the damaged tanker to another tanker.

Crews plan on returning Saturday to continue to evaluate and determine if more cleaning is needed in the area.
