Oven Timer Sends Armed Robbers Running

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Police are looking for two robbers who held up a 7-Eleven at gunpoint, threatening to kill the clerk, before they were scared away by an unlikely source.

The robbers likely thought they were smart, by putting masks on their faces before pointing a gun at 7-Eleven employees and ordering one to open the register.

Apparently they don't understand how surveillance cameras work, and that most aim toward the front door. Video clearly shows their faces the moment they entered.

After stealing an employee's wallet which contained $70, Miami-Dade Police say one of the robbers racked his gun and threatened to kill all three people inside the store.

That is until they took off running, scared off by an oven timer they mistook for an alarm.

"Something has to be done, really," said Glen Bohobson, who works at the Caribbean bakery next door to the 7-Eleven at 1000 NE 215th Street in Miami.

Bohobson says the robberies at 7-Eleven have been rampant. They were robbed in January and March of this year and Bohobson says that's just the start.

"I think they've been robbed like 3 to 4 times in the past year now to be honest with you," he told CBS4's Natalia Zea.

He believes robberies like this directly impact his business.

"When they come and see next door being robbed like that, they're kind of skeptical about coming and shopping."

And he believes releasing surveillance video to catch robbers after the crime is not nearly enough.

"I think if Miami-Dade patrolled more often in this neighborhood itself, it might be different."

Police believe both men are in their 20s. One man is believed to be around 5'10", 180 - 200 pounds. The other robber is described as about 5'8", 130 pounds.

If you recognize the two men in the surveillance video call police or Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
