South Florida law enforcement agencies take part in Operation Heat Shield

MIAMI - In an effort to keep people safe, law enforcement officers from around South Florida took part in Operation Heat Shield.

The training creates different scenarios for law enforcement officers that force them to work quickly in extremely chaotic and emotional environments.

"If and when, unfortunately, something comes to visit Miami-Dade County, we are ready to respond appropriately," said Maj. Arnold Palmer with the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Hundreds of officers and fire rescue crews from Palm Beach, Broward, City of Miami and Miami-Dade County partook in the training.

Crews were tasked to care for "wounded" victims, save hostages with the shooter—still out there.

"They will learn things like communication skills, incident command, bureaucracy, policies and how other departments work," says Palmer. "The goal is that we can fix any potential issues now, so we don't have them later."
