Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Calls For End To Violence After Teens Shot Overnight

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Two separate drive by shootings in Miami sent two teenagers to the hospital early Monday.
A 13-year-old was transported to Ryder Trauma Center after gunmen sprayed bullets in the 1200 block of NW 4th Street near Marlins Park.
Some went through a cottage, hitting the 13-year-old who was asleep.
"He's doing very bad, he's in the hospital getting surgery, he lost three toes, and he got shot in the arm," said Erika Martinez, a 12-year-old friend of the teen, who visited him.
The cottage wasn't the only structure hit. Bullets also slammed into an apartment building next door and a car in the parking lot. No one was inside the car at the time.
Neighbors said this was not the first time they've had a drive-by shooting, in fact it was the third one in the neighborhood since Halloween.
The other shooting victim is 15 years old, according to Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
Carvalho said he spoke to the police department early Monday and was told two students had been hit by gunfire.
The 15-year-old was hit in the area of NW 85th Street and 5th Avenue.
The superintendent took to Twitter, writing: "Attacks on our community's youth must end. Two teens shot overnight, & the body of a precious little girl found in dumpster. Heartbreaking."
Carvalho urged the community to report criminal activity to the police.
