Officials: Miami Man Stole Money Intended For Cancer Screenings
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – State officials announced they have arrested the owner and operator of the Haitian American Association against Cancer in Miami.
He is accused of stealing nearly $300,000 in state funds intended to help screen Haitian American women for cancer.
Officials said during an investigation by the Florida Department of Financial Services' Office of Fiscal Integrity, Jacques Albert Calixte, 44, provided fraudulent bank statements and payroll checks to the Florida Department of Health in order to receive payments.
Calixte also allegedly provided information about clients who never received treatment and fabricated healthcare clinic reports.
The majority of the screenings would have involved free mammograms for women.
Doctors confirmed to investigators their signatures were forged or photocopied.
He was found to allegedly have spent as little as $16,000 for client screenings in 2011 and between 2012 and 2013, he had no expenditures for screenings or testing for Haitian American women.
The care was required by contracts, said officials.
