Obama, Castro Meet At The Summit Of The Americas

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- President Obama and Cuban leader Raul Castro greeted one another Friday night.

It was their first face-to-face encounter since the historic announcement of a change in U.S.-Cuba relations.

The two heads of states met during the inauguration ceremony and state dinner at the Summit of the Americas.

Obama and Castro spoke by phone ahead of the summit. The deputy director of Cuba's state-run national information agency said the president and Castro spoke last night.

The White House has confirmed the two spoke, but didn't release details on their conversation.

It's only the second conversation between the leaders in more than 50 years.

The first time was in December, shortly before President Obama and Castro announced plans to restore diplomatic ties.

It's also possible President Obama will also use the summit to announce the U.S. will remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

While no final decision has been made, there is speculation President Obama may be ready to announce his decision on that matter on Saturday.

On the sidelines of the summit, history between the two countries was already being made.

The two are seen shaking hands which marks the "highest-level encounter" between the U.S. and Cuba in over 50 years.
