GAINESVILLE (CBSMiami/AP) -- A north Florida man is recovering after he lost part of his arm in a wood chipper accident.

Roberto Serrano, 60, was putting tree branches into the chipper on Monday when his arm somehow got caught in the machine and pulled half of it through, according to the Alachua County Sheriff's office.

The Gainesville Sun reported Serrano freed himself but lost the arm up to his elbow.

An ambulance happened to be in the area when Serrano made the 911 call and a deputy was able to apply a tourniquet to control the bleeding.

Serrano was taken to the hospital, listed in stable condition.
