NOAA To Move Hurricane Hunter Planes Out Of MacDill Base

TAMPA (CBSMiami/AP) - The search is on for a new Florida home for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hurricane Hunter planes.

Currently based at the MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, the planes must be moved by July 1st, 2017 because the Air Force needs the hangar space.

NOAA plans to find a new home for the planes within 50 miles of MacDill. They have posted a request for information on a federal website seeking additional details from interested airports.

The MacDill relocation is expected to happen after the 2016 hurricane season in November and before the 2017 season in June.
