MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A North Miami Beach man died after he jumped into the water to go after a boat anchor.

Saturday afternoon Damian Deandre Smith, 41, was on board a private vessel with a group of people when they decided to anchor in the waters near Molasses Reef in about 50 feet of water. Someone on the boat threw the anchor into the water. However it was not secured to the boat and the anchor and line both went overboard.

Smith put on a mask, snorkel, fins and a heavy weight belt and reportedly went into the water to get it. Those on the boat said they saw him surface once and then go back underwater. He did not resurface after that.

Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for him. Divers from Key Largo Fire Rescue on board a private vessel, who were also in the area, found located Smith's lifeless body on the ocean bottom near the anchor.
