"Move Over Law" Expands To Include Sanitation Trucks

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Sunshine State drivers take note, as of earlier this month, going the posted speed limit by a sanitation truck may result in a ticket.

Under the law, drivers must move over at least one lane from the shoulder when a patrol car, emergency vehicle and/or tow truck is stopped on the side of a road with lights flashing. As of July 1^st, Florida's "Move Over Law" expanded to include sanitation trucks.

Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 7005 into law which includes a section that adds sanitation and utility vehicles to the state's existing "Move Over Act."

Drivers, when a sanitation truck is pulled over on the road, must move over to another lane and slow down to 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit.

According to the National Waste and Recycling Association, being struck by motorists is a leading cause of death for waste and recycling collection employees nationwide.

Violating the Move Over Law puts both drivers and public safety, sanitation and utility professionals at risk.

Violating the law may result in costly fines and court fees as well as three points added to the driver's license.
