MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The University of Miami community is mourning the passing of Edna Shalala, the mother of the university's president Donna Shalala.

Edna Shalala passed away Tuesday at 103 years of age. She is remembered as a champion of health and wellness, staying active throughout her life.

"I do everything a young person does—classes, lectures, water exercises, yoga," Edna Shalala, at 96, told CBS4's news partner the Miami Herald.

Edna Shalala, among many other accomplishments, became the first female attorney of Syrian-Lebanese heritage to practice law in Cleveland when she passed the bar in 1952, according to the Herald.

The University plans to host its first annual Edna C. Shalala 5K Run/Walk on December 12th in her honor.
