MLB Tightening Security At Games
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Going to a baseball game will be a lot like going to the airport next year after Major League Baseball mandated to all 30 teams that security screening for fans must have either a hand-held metal detector or a walk-through metal detector.
"This procedure, which results from MLB's continuing work with the Department of Homeland Security to standardize security practices across the game, will be in addition to bag checks that are now uniform throughout MLB," baseball spokesman Michael Teevan said Tuesday.
Several teams have already implemented plans including the Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, Oakland A's, and San Francisco Giants. Security at professional sporting events was intensified last year after the Boston Marathon bombing.
Teevan said the systems were tested at the 2013 All-Star game and World Series without any issues from fans. MLB fans, much like NFL fans, are already limited to how much they can bring in a bag to a game. MLB limits bags to 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches, slightly larger than the NFL bags.
MLB will be assisted in the program by CEIA USA, Ltd. which manufactures walk-through metal detectors.
