CORAL GABLES (AP) — Jacob Heyward hit a two-run single to highlight a three-run second inning, and Miami topped Virginia Commonwealth 3-2 on Friday in Game 1 of the NCAA super regional series.

Miami (48-15) can wrap up its first trip to the College World Series since 2008 with a win Saturday. Ricky Eusebio had two hits and an RBI for the Hurricanes.

Andrew Suarez (9-1) went five innings, allowing three hits for Miami. Bryan Garcia pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save.

VCU starter JoJo Howie (8-7) pitched 6 1-3 innings, allowing three runs — none earned — while striking out two and walking three. Howie, who has a mild form of muscular dystrophy, had his ERA drop to 2.77 for the Rams (40-23), who lost for the second time in their last 16 games.

The game was delayed 90 minutes midway through the fifth inning because of lightning in the area.
