Miami Marlins Considered Long Shots to Win NL East
The Miami Marlins made a slew of moves in the offseason, most notably re-signing Giancarlo Stanton (13 years, $325 million) to the largest contract in North American sports history. They also acquired speedy second baseman Dee Gordon, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and a couple capable pitchers in Mat Latos and Dan Haren.
Still, Vegas pegs them as long shots to compete in the NL East at this point. Bovada has the fish at +600, behind the Nationals (-500) and Mets (+500).
Miami's been given 16 to 1 odds to win the National League (behind eight teams) and 33 to 1 odds to win the World Series (19th). What can't help is phenom pitcher Jose Fernandez expected to be out until at least June as he takes the lengthy road of recovery back from Tommy John surgery.
So while the Marlins will be unleashing an upgraded roster in the minds of most on Opening Day in April, Vegas doesn't consider them contenders just yet.
