Miami Herald Awards 2014 Silver Knight Winners

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It was a big night for South Florida's top high school seniors Tuesday.

The annual Silver Knight Awards were handed out by CBS4's news partners at the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald.

The event took place at the James L. Knight Center.

One Marjory Stoneman Douglas High student created a bilingual pen pal program for orphaned girls in Honduras, according to the paper. Another, from Stranahan High, worked on software that helps find missing children around the country.

The awards are given to students from local public and private schools who are nominated and then judged based on their academics.
