Miami Firefighter Found Dead Off Rickenbacker Causeway

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A sad day for the City of Miami Fire Department as firefighters mourn the loss of one of their own.

After a moment of silence and salute, firefighters draped a flag over the body of their fellow firefighter and escorted him to the Medical Examiner's office.

According to Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Ignatius Carroll, the body of the still unidentified firefighter, was found off the Rickenbacker Causeway on Hobie Beach around 8:00 a.m.

The firefighter was scheduled to work Wednesday and was wearing his uniform.

Officials responded to the scene after reports a person had been shot.

"Right now we are not sure how and why this happened," said Capt. Carroll. "We do know it is a very sad moment for the city of Miami fire department and the members of the department grief counselors will be made available to help the firefighters deal with this unfortunate tragedy." 

Police are still investigating how and why this happened.
