Miami Dolphins Practice Report: Thursday

DAVIE (CBSMiami) -- After snagging an unpleasant-but-necessary Week 1 win in Washington, the Miami Dolphins are amid preparations for the perpetually struggling Jacksonville Jaguars.

Will it be difficult not to overlook a team that's won just three of their last 17 games dating back to last season?

"First off, we can't overlook anybody," Brent Grimes said before Thursday's practice. "They have talent. Any NFL team has tons of talent. If you go in there and think it's going to be an easy game, you're in for a rude awakening. We have to approach this game like the Jaguars won the Super Bowl last year."

Helping Miami's cause would be an improved bill of health, specifically Dion Sims (concussion), Reshad Jones (hammy), and Derrick Shelby (eye). Sims and Shelby did not practice while Jones was believed to be limited.

Notes

~ The Dolphins have been surprisingly potent in back-to-back road games over the last two seasons. They went 4-0 in such scenarios in 2013 and 3-1 in 2014.

~ What's the deal with linebacker/edge rusher Chris McCain? After going from preseason starter to Week 1 inactive, the talented physical specimen was looking to make an impact in his second year with the team. Some think he's in the dog house, but it wouldn't be implausible to see him activated this week.

Chris says he's been getting more snaps in practice and needs to "make it count" when his number is called.

"Every week's a new week as I said to him at the end of last week and I said to him early this week," Philbin said after practice. "We make decisions based on whatever 46 guys are gonna give us the best chance to win. I really thought yesterday and even today he was busting his tail out here at practice. He looks very good this week in preparation."

~ Ryan Tannehill and rookie receiver DeVante Parker were seen working together after practice while Philbin addressed the media. Miami's first-round pick played only one snap at Washington. Will they unleash their gifted playmaker on Sunday after the offense tallied just 10 points in Week 1?

~ How bad has Blake Bortles been since getting drafted third overall in 2014? He was the NFL's worst rated quarterback in QBR last season and his Week 1 showing didn't fare much better, ranking 28th. Blake has been especially abysmal throwing deep, ranking 36th in accuracy percentage last year among qualifying QBs in balls thrown 20 yards or more, via Pro Football Focus.
