Miami-Dade school police officer injured in crash

MIAMI - A police officer with Miami-Dade Public Schools was injured in a traffic crash early Thursday afternoon.

Officials with the Hialeah Police Department said they were investing the crash at West Okeechobee Road and West 18 Avenue.

The injured officer, who was not immediately identified, was taken to Westland Hialeah Senior High School and from there was  airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center.

The officer was said to be in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon. Officials did not immediately say how long the officer had been employed with the district.

The driver of the white Dodge Charger who was also involved in the crash was treated at the scene, investigators said.

According to school district officials, the injured officer was responding to an emergency at another school when the crash happened.

It was not clear if the other driver would face charges in connection with the wreck.

Daniel Alvaro, who said he was driving behind the officer on West 18th Avenue, said the officer began driving when the light turned green.

"He went ahead and then whether he wasn't looking or the other driver was going too fast they ended up intersecting with each other," Alvaro said.
