Miami-Dade Going High-Tech With App To Make Streets Safer

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade is going high-tech in hopes of making the county's streets safer.
Mayor Carlos Gimenez has teamed up with Miami-Dade Police Department and Microsoft to launch a community policing app.
The mayor unveiled the Community on Patrol App, or COPA for short, Tuesday morning at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
The app can be downloaded on a smartphone and will be available for all county citizens and officers. The point of the app is to get residents involved in keeping their community safe.
"COPA will be a tool for approximately 2,700 police officers and our county's residents for them to use to better protect," Mayor Gimenez said.

The project cost the county $50,000. Microsoft put in $80,000.
The app is currently in its testing phase; the kinks are being worked on and they are figuring out how to avoid bogus tips so officers can focus on the helpful information submitted.
The county expects to release the app this summer.
