MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Authorities are investigating a situation where a man was killed in a freak accident on the job.

The tragic incident took the life of a longtime employee of the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition.

Miami-Dade Police say the victim, a security worker in his early 70s, was found by another co-worker who called officers just before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say he was attempting to close the gate at the home of the fair near Coral Way and SW 109th Avenue. That's when the gate somehow fell on him and killed him.

The company released a statement Tuesday saying they are "saddened by the death of our longtime employee from an apparent workplace accident."

The company says they are cooperating with police who are conducting an investigation into the deadly incident.

Police say they are not sure how this happened and when it happened.

Anyone who may have witnessed this or can provide information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
