Miami-Dade Commission Approves Body Cams For Cops

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami-Dade police officers are closer to getting outfitted with body cameras.

On Tuesday, county commissioners approved their use. The vote came after Mayor Carlos Gimenez set aside one million dollars in the county budget for the cameras.

"I have advocated for body worn cameras since the fall of 2012 because I have always believed that they will help build confidence between law enforcement and our residents, as well as reduce the number of frivolous complaints against our officers," Gimenez said in a statement. "I remain committed to using this technology to enhance the safety of our 2.6 million residents and the Miami-Dade police officers who protect our County."

Miami Beach police debuted body cameras last month. Miami-Dade officers are expected to get them by the end of the year.
