Men Rescued After Boat Takes On Water Near Government Cut

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A day on the water took an unexpected turn for some boaters who were fortunate that help was nearby.
"We were coming in and another, bigger boat went by and the waves came in over the front and the engine stalled and we couldn't ride it out, so he took two waves back to back," said Rene Lavan.
The boat almost submerged, the men took to the water after sending out a Mayday call.
Fish and wildlife officers raced to the rescue.
"We had to call in for help and these guys were there in less than two minutes to get us out of the water. I can't believe how quick they got there. It was just incredible," said Rene Lavan.
Not only did the FWC officers rescue the three men, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue saved their boat from sinking.
Reynel Lavan was a man of few but very grateful words.
"They are amazing guys, amazing. They are heroes to me," he said.
For the wildlife officers, it was just another days work.
"It was all of us. Just team work together, being in the right place at the right time, doing our jobs," said FWC Officer Dionis Delgado.
This drama is an example of how dangerous the ocean can be.
"We've been fishing these waters for over 30 years and you never know," he said. "It just goes to show you that you're never safe out there, you know."
No question, the sea can be a scary and angry place.
