MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Boating is a popular past time in South Florida, and with the summer season around the bend, officials have set up an SMS alert system to help plan for a safe day on the water.

The Miami-Dade County, Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department created the "Miami-Dade Marina SMS Alerts," in hopes that boaters will sign up to help plan and prepare for boat days.

The service will help keep boaters up-to-date on such issues as hazardous weather conditions and boat ramp closures and re-openings via text alerts to their email or mobile.
