MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A man, who police were attempting to pick up, opened fire towards detectives and got away in a stolen car.

Miami-Dade Police Department, Warrants Bureau, was attempting to pick up Matthew Pryor at 2290 NE 136 Street for two outstanding probation warrants.

As detectives approached 30-year-old Pryor, MDPD said the man opened fire towards detectives. Officers began to set up a perimeter when they received a call regarding a carjacking matching Pryor's description.

"While he was running across 135th street," said Lt, John Jenkins from Miami-Dade Police, "there's preliminary information that he was possibly struck by a vehicle at which time he immediately got up and was able to carjack a female who was getting ready for work this morning."

The victim of the carjacking was not hurt.

Police said Pryor took a silver 2011 Nissan Rogue with Florida tag E59-5JT. He was last seen fleeing westbound in the Nissan.

Pryor's mother is urging her son not to run.

"Matthew! Come home, please turn yourself in," she said. "Please turn yourself in. Don't hurt yourself."

Neighbors heard the gunfire around 7 AM.

Eddie and his wife Peggy Ruiz live very close by. They were letting the dogs out when it happened.

"It scared me to death," said Peggy Ruiz. " I ran and tripped over my stairs, I ran in the house to duck, cover."

Serving arrest warrants can be very dangerous. It was the same squad that lost two officers four years ago; Officers Amanda Haworth and Roger Castillo were killed while serving a warrant.

Pryor has a long criminal history and was recently released from prison. "He is a career criminal," said Lt.  Jenkins. "The charges do vary from theft, to possession to burglary charges, but obviously this is a very dangerous individual that would, some officers come to arrest him for these warrants and he'd shoot at those officers."

According to police, Pryor has various tattoos on his arms and legs.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
